You can check out some pictures here. Big THANK YOU!!! to everyone who helped co-create this fabulous evening including the band (Asher, Carlton and Tye), Jason Mastrine, Doug Balk, the entire Mississippi Studios organization and the best music community in the country – Portland, Oregon!!! I anticipate more such events in the coming year(s)... We did multi-track the show (which I haven’t listened to yet) and who knows, maybe we’ll mix a few tracks for “Download of the Now” or something??? OK so stay-tuned! Alaska Folk Festival 2009![]() Festival Performance Set
New Tune Improv Been Along This Road Trouble No More I was joined by: Forrest Gibson - mandolin Grant Dermody - harmonica Bob Banghart - fiddle I've been coming to the Alaska Folk Festival in Juneau whenever possible since 1993. I missed some years in there but it has always been a special place for me. It's an event where some of the greatest musicians you'll ever hear (but may not hear of) convene and tell the stories. The music here feels alive and there are amazing humans all around to drink it up. Something is very "true" about this one. The whole state community is involved and people come from all around, cutting across all the obvious divides of what instrument they play (Celtic bassoon anyone?) age, ability, race, sex, color, creed etc. Just people getting together and energizing themselves with the music and the music with themselves. It is a timeless sort of experience and a real soul feed. Friday night I played old time fiddle tunes with my pals Scotty Meyer and Kate Bull. We saw the sun come up on that one... Scotty is masterful on fiddle the old time way, and as hard-driving rhythmically as they come - plus he knows about 6 billion tunes (5,999,000,000 of them are crooked). He recorded a great record with my pals Forrest Gibson and Grant Dermody called "The Improbabillies" many years ago. Kate said she hadn't picked up her banjo since last festival. I didn't notice. I'm a fish out of water with that stuff but I love to play it because when it's peakin', you kind of disappear in a way. One BIG SOUND, locked in all together - being and nothingness. I followed that slice of heaven with two late nights in a quiet little gallery, surrounded by beautiful paintings on canvas swapping tunes of all kinds (mostly original) with the folks Forrest and I affectionately call "the Whitehorse Gals" - Kim Barlow, Natalie Edelson, Kim Beggs and Anne-Louise Genest. Look them up. They live in the Yukon and freakin' play the coolest most subtle stuff... plus they sing so well together it's rather stunning and write many songs that make me fall off my chair laughing. Kim and Anne-Louise have a band called "Annie Lou" check them out, too! Anyway, this was one for the ages. I posted some photos on my facebook page that might give you a glimpse of the flavor. Thank you... for a real good time. Lewi Longmire - "Fire 'Neath the Still"
I finally opened up Lewi's latest record which he gave me months ago... "Fire 'Neath the Still". For Pete's sake, I had totally forgotten I had it until I was moving gear from one box to another and there it was. So, forgive me Lewi - I just now got to hear it!
And I want to say, in some weird way it was worth the wait! This is a really great record with some tunes that are absolutely classic worthy. My favorites are: "Whatchoo Gonna Do About...?", "Voluntary Martyr" and "This Time." Lewi's unmistakable Tele sound is captured wonderfully and his vocal is completely good and completely honest. Just like the man. Just like the band. Here's another thing... I like this album because I feel like it really "captures" who is conveying the music... you know what I mean? It connects - it's like you "know" the person in the song. Having strong characters in the songs helps alot, too. Which are plenty on this record. Check out Lewi's whole roots americana trip... makes me want to hitchike across the desert. www.lewilongmire.com 4/8/09 Setlist: Piano Throwers - Laurelthirst Public House
Ok, so I'm going to try to reconstruct the setlist from memory. This is nearly impossible as I often can't remember where I put my keys... It ended up another classic night at the 'Thirst with Tye and Carlton in rare form on mic and great to see everyone. Kind of a late start I guess owing to tax season, longer sunlight and a rippin' extended happy hour set by Laura Veirs & Friends but the usual suspects were there en masse to pull us through. Thanks y'all!
